Burdette Homer “Red” Gaines, of Eureka, died at Greenwood County Hospital, on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at the age of 93.
He was born on December 10, 1909 in Elbing, Kansas, The son of Sam Owen and Emma Viola (Merryfield) Gaines. He was raised in the Elbing area and attended school there. After his schooling he went to work on the family farm.
On September 19, 1935, he was united in marriage to Doris F. Blaisdell in El Dorado, Kansas. In 1937 the family moved to Oklahoma City where Burdette began his career with Phillips 66 as an oil field pumper. The family moved several times with his job. He retired in 1974 and he and Doris moved to Eureka in 1976.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of the home, two sons, Vernon Gaines and Kenneth Gaines both of Wichita Falls, Texas, three daughters, Dorothy Coons of Eureka, Kathryn Dunn of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Judy Fugett of Dallas, Texas, one brother, Ralph Gaines of Half Moon Bay, California, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 17, 2003, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name with the Jefferson Street Baptist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
