Beulah Cordelia McCollum Bohn, daughter of Grover McCollum and Laura Smith McCollum was born on March 29, 1909, at the family home near Fall River, Kansas. Beulah passed away on April 3, 2006 at the age of 97.
In May 1928, Beulah graduated from Severy High School with a Normal Training Certificate and began her teaching career that fall. She began working on her college degree the following summer and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from Emporia State Teachers College in August 1962. She retired in 1973 following a teaching career of 35-1/2 years of teaching children in Greenwood, Elk, and Butler counties.
On June 3, 1944, Roland Wesley Bohn and Beulah Cordelia were united in marriage. Following their marriage, they purchased the farm which Roland had been renting. To this union were born two daughters, Loria Howard of Eureka, Kansas, and Ronda Hoover of Wichita, Kansas.
At an early age Beulah accepted Christ and united with the Severy Methodist Church. Through the years she was active in church by teaching children in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and serving as Historian. She was very active in the lives of her grandchildren. She attended many schools, sports, and 4-H events in which they participated.
Upon her retirement from teaching, Beulah was active in the Greenwood-Elk Retired Teachers Association. She served as President of her local unit from 1978-1982 and was Sixth District Director of KRTA from 1982-1986. Retirement also allowed her to pursue several other areas. She completed and quilted many quilts including one for each of her grandchildren. She was awarded various prizes for her quilts at the Greenwood County Fair as well as the Kansas State Fair. Other interests included genealogy, gardening and caring for her cow herd.
Besides her daughters and their spouses Richard Howard and Robert Hoover, Jr., she is survived by four grandchildren, Bret Howard, Bart Howard, Lauren Howard Ham and Robert Hoover, III, and her great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Danielle Howard, Tristan and Trey Howard, and Taylor Ham. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Jane Phillips, West Richland, Washington, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the Severy United Methodist Church, in Severy, Kansas, with Reverend Gary Parsons and Pastor Alan Hunter officiating. Interment will follow in South Lawn Cemetery, in Severy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in her name to the Greenwood County Hospice and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.
