Betty Lou Doerr of Eureka, died on Monday, August 22, 2011, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 87.
She was born on September 4, 1923, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the daughter of Leo and Lovie (Bird) McLain. The family lived in Oklahoma and Wyoming before moving to Burrton in 1936 where Betty attended junior high school and high school, graduating in 1941. After attending Bethel College in Newton for two years, she attended the University of Kansas and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
After working a year in Honolulu, she returned to Kansas and worked at Wesley Hospital, in Wichita. While working in Pediatrics caring for a child with polio, she met George Doerr. The child, LuAnn had a younger brother, Terry Jon. George and Betty were united in marriage in 1951. To this union a daughter, Linda Sue was born. This marriage ended in divorce in 1986.
In 1956 the family bought the TipTop Motel and moved to Eureka. Betty worked part time at the Greenwood County Hospital. Then 14 years in Drs. Obourn and Hollenbeck’s office and 15 years as the Bi-County Health Nurse retiring in 1989. Later she worked 5 years at Medicalodge of Eureka.
Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, a Past Matron of the Queen Bess Chapter #56 Order of the Eastern Star, and Past President of the Eureka Business Women, Lamplighters of the Methodist Church, Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary, Eureka Lionesses, and American Legion Post #50 Auxiliary. In 2007 she was named Ambassador of the Year for the Kansas Health Care Association and the Kansas Center for Assisted Living.
She is survived by three children, LuAnn Weatherbee of Eureka; Terry Jon Doerr of Louisville, Kentucky; and Linda Sue (Jerry) Cook of Eureka; seven grandchildren, Kim Rogers of Eureka; Mona Vinson of Eureka; Kristin (Jason) Wawrzaszek of Wichita; Erin (Renee) Burk of Eureka; Jason (Caroline) Burk of El Dorado; Christopher Doerr of Louisville, Kentucky; Jon (Angie) Potter of Washington; seventeen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church of Eureka with Reverend Kenneth Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary or to the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
