Bessie Irene (Evans) Burtin, the last surviving child of John S. Evans and Nettie L. Blair departed this life at the Greenwood County Hospital, on January 2, 2006 at the age of 92 years and 9 months.
Bessie was born at Buffalo, Missouri on March 30, 1913. She grew up around Buffalo and attended Cloverdale School. She was united in marriage to H. E. Burtin on April 6, 1929 Lone Rock, Missouri. They then moved to the Long Lane, Missouri area until they moved to Eureka in 1944. To this union, five children were born, Marvin (Jane) of El Dorado, Maye (Herman) Friedlan of Eureka, Martin (Jeanne) of Eureka, Melvin (Judy) of Fort Lupton, Colorado, and Marilyn (Calvin) Massey of Eureka.
Bessie was a homemaker and was employed at USD 389 as a Paraprofessional for a number of years. She was a member of the Cedar Ridge Baptist Church at Long Lane, Missouri, later transferring her membership to the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, in Eureka. She belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Beautiful Valley HDU, Magic Circle Quilters Guild, and the Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary, of which she was a member from 1976 to the present.
Her favorite hobbies were flowers, sewing, and quilting. She was an avid quilter and hand quilted many quilts.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, four sisters, and two grandsons. She is survived by her 5 children, 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2006 at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in her name to the Jefferson Street Baptist Church and the Greenwood County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
