Bessie Irene Abbey, of Virgil, died on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Coffey County Hospital, in Burlington, Kansas at the age of 93.
She was born on December 21, 1910, in Carpenter, Oklahoma, the daughter of Albert Calvin and Allie Mae (Gatten) Moad. She was raised in Oklahoma and attended school there.
On August 23, 1935, Bessie was united in marriage to Leonard “Ray” Abbey in Newkirk, Oklahoma. They made their home in Virgil, Kansas before moving to Mulhall, Oklahoma in 1949. In 1959, the family moved to Burlington, Kansas and resided there until 1976, when they moved back to Virgil. Ray preceded her in death on February 6, 1989.
Bessie was a farm wife and homemaker and a member of the Burlington Quilting Club.
She is survived by two sons, Leonard Abbey, Jr. of Yates Center, Kansas, and Calvin Abbey of Lander, Wyoming; two daughters, Bonita Greene of Bakersfield, California, and Darlene Lemen of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two step-daughters, Marjorie Fink of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Peggy Perrion of Easton, Kansas; nineteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and two brothers, Hanford Moad of Bakersfield, California, and Sidney Moad of Buchanan, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, Kansas with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, Kansas.
