Bernice Evelyn Crossfield 92, died February 29, 2008 at the Richmond Health and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Kansas.

She was born on April 14, 1915 the daughter of David Elijah and Mable (Gilliland) Schlingloff in Hill City, Kansas. She took Normal training and got her teachers certificate and taught school for a few years, then went on to Emporia State Teachers College and took the Cosmetology training. On January 29, 1939, she arrived in Toronto, Kansas to run a beauty shop until it closed in 2002 when she left Toronto.

On April 1, 1941 she was united in marriage to Lewis Ira Crossfield. To this union were born three children.

She was an active member in Toronto United Methodist Church, Golden Star Chapter, Toronto Senior Center and Toronto Booster Club and enjoyed all sports and playing games and spending time with her family and friends. She was well known for her nylon net balls and two-crust lemon pies, embroidering and quilting and hosted Bible Study in her home for many years until her health forced her to leave Toronto and her home. She will be missed by many, she was loved by all.

She leaves in mourning, son, Carrol Crossfield and wife Diana of Ottawa, Kansas, daughters, Helen Crossfield of Mabelvale, Arkansas, and Kay Banks and husband Ted of Toronto, Kansas, brother, David Schlingloff of Hill City, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Humerickhouse of Olathe, Barbara Pifer of Toronto, Marie Webb of Alma, Penny Webb of Little Rock, Arkansas, Daphne Powell of Mabelvale, Arkansas, Jerry Banks and Kristy Little of Toronto, eight great-grandchildren, Amber Hoffman, Miranda and Christian Pifer, John Peterson, Joshua, Ashley and Amber TenEyck, Trever Goss and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lew, two sisters, Wilda Michael and Fern Mapes and one great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 4, 3008 at the Toronto United Methodist Church. Visitation Sunday March 2, 1 - 3 P.M. Inturment will follow at Toronto Cemetery. Memorial to Toronto United Methodist Church.
