Avis Barrows Candy, of Eureka, died Friday, February 25, 2005, at Gran Villas at the age of 89.
She was born on February 7, 1916, in Waltham, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Langsdale Barrows and “Tina” Eglantine Nutting. In 1926, the family moved to Burbank, California where Avis graduated from Burbank High School.
On April 6, 1935, she was united in marriage to Robert Atwood. He preceded her in death. On November 14, 1964, Avis was married to George W. Candy in Portland, Oregon. They traveled throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico for 15 years before settling in Apache Junction, Arizona in 1983. George preceded Avis in death on May 10, 1989. After George’s death she moved to Eureka to be near family.
Avis was a devoted Wife, Mother, and Nana besides being a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian and Congregational Church, Climax Friendship Club, Sorosis, Hospital Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and had been a Cub Scout Leader.
She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Sheridan L. “Sheri” Hall of Eureka, daughter, Judy L. Candy of Hawaiian Gardens, California, sons, Robert B. Atwood of Baltimore, Maryland and Gary G. Candy of San Antonio, Texas, 13 Grandchildren, and 23 ½ Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughters; Charlotte June Wiggins, Juanita, infant son; Nicholas and one sister.
Memorial services were held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Dennis of Christ Lutheran Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in her name to the Eureka Library Building Fund for the New Children’s Section and the Midian Shrine Plane of Mercy. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
