Allen Curtis Sherman, of Toronto, died at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, on August 30, 2010, at the age of 88.
He was born in Toronto, on January 17, 1922, the son of Allen Coats and Sadie (Curtis) Sherman. He was raised in Toronto and graduated from Toronto High School. After his schooling he worked for Boeing in Wichita. He then entered the United States Army Air Force and served his country with honor and dignity during World War II. Upon his discharge he attended Neosho County Community College and Kansas State University where he received a Bachelors of Education degree. On March 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Strohm in Chanute. Allen began his teaching career in Jewel, Kansas where he taught Vocational Agriculture. In 1960, he moved to a farm near Toronto and started farming. In the mid 1960’s he taught elementary school in Neal, then he taught Industrial Arts in the Hamilton school system. When his teaching career was over, he returned to farming. Mary preceded him in death on June 23, 1999.
Allen was a member of the Toronto Methodist Church, the Toronto Masonic Lodge, and the Blue Lodge.
He is survived by two sons; David Sherman of Virgil and Mark Sherman of Emporia, one daughter; Ruth Bennett of Miami, Oklahoma, three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and four brothers; Leslie Sherman, Elmer Sherman, and Ed Sherman, all of Toronto, and Kenneth Sherman of Kechi. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Catherine Seiter, one brother, and one sister.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the Toronto Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name to the Toronto Senior Center. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
