Hazel Milliken, of Eureka, Kansas, died on Sunday, October 24, 2004, at Medicalodge of Eureka at the age of 97.
She was born on October 21, 1907, in Eureka, the daughter of Alfred Hayden and Zulah (Stringham) Gregg. Hazel was raised in Fairview Township and attended Fairview Grade School and Eureka High School, graduating with the class of 1925.
After her schooling, she worked for the Principal and Superintendent of Eureka Schools as a secretary until 1938. On June 29, 1929, she was united in marriage to Herman Milliken in Sedan, Kansas. They made their home in Eureka where she was a homemaker until 1959, when she returned to her position with the school district. She retired in 1972. Herman preceded her in death on December 28, 1980.
Hazel was a member of the Christian and Congregational Church, a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Bess Chapter #56, and Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls, the Greenwood County Historical Society, Altrurian Club, and the Garden Club.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Jim Seymour of Eureka, three grandchildren, Jamie Hulse and her husband Rob of Lawrence, Kansas, Amy Shobe and her husband Terrell of DeSoto, Missouri, and Jon Seymour of Eureka, and five great-grandchildren, Jessica Shobe, Drew Hulse, Cali Shobe, Nate Hulse, and Trey Hulse. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 28, 2004, at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor Fred Jordan, Reverend Dr. Gilbert Daniel, and Pastor Stan Seymour officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has established memorials in her name with the Christian and Congregational Church, Eureka Carnegie Library Building Fund, and the Eureka Medicalodge. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
