Alfred Edwin Ward, of Eureka, died on Friday, January 23, 2004, at the Greenwood County Hospital at the age of 83.

He was born on March 15, 1920, in Greenwood County, Kansas, the son of Walter and Edna (Cain) Ward. He was raised and attended school in the Neal and Fall River area. After his schooling he farmed on the Ward Farm near Fall River.

On December 2, 1940, Alfred was united in marriage to Freda Mitchell in McPherson, Kansas. They made their home on the Ward Farm between Neal and Fall River until the mid 1950’s when the family moved to Toronto. In 1967 the family moved to Eureka. Alfred worked as a farmer before he began his career with the Kansas Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. He retired in the early 1980’s.

Alfred was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Toronto.

He is survived by his wife, Freda, of the home, one son, Don Ward of Mulvane, one daughter, Marilyn Fuhlhage of Eureka, eleven grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, January 26, 2004, at the Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Lloyd Stewart of the Bible Baptist Church and Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in his name to the Arthritis Foundation and the Greenwood County Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
