Albert C. Pickell was born northwest of Elk Falls, Kansas on March 2, 1921, the son of George and Laura Shaw Pickell. He died at Galachia Heart Hospital in Wichita on Wednesday, June 14, 2006.

Albert grew up in the Elk Falls area and drove a shackle team and put up hay when he was five years old. He started to school a year earlier than most children because the family lived about two miles from the school, and since they didn't want their daughter, Ruby, to walk to school alone, Albert was to walk with her and he just stayed at school and started his education early. He attended high school in Elk Falls.

He married Marie Leo in Independence, Kansas on March 26, 1944. She died December 1, 2004. They first worked on the McKinney Ranch in Howard, then to the Ben Day Ranch in Longton, the J Bar J in Fall River, and then moved to Eureka in 1967, where he worked on different ranches in this area. He started braiding when he moved into town in Eureka in 1987. He has made reins, halters, saddle girts, breast collars, and staple pockets for people in the area and has mailed them to ranches across the country. He had two articles published in the American Cowboy magazine and numerous articles have been written about Albert in various newspapers. He started a new career of peeling potatoes for Joy Jensen at the Paddock Café in 2000.

Albert was survived by one sister, Ruby Patchett of Emporia; one brother, Clifford Pickell of Wichita; several nieces and nephews, including Earnie Chaffain of Hartford, Kansas. He also leaves many friends and ranching partners. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Charles Pickell, and Cleetis Pickell.

Funeral services were held at Koup Family Funeral Home, on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 10:00 A.M., with interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
